Preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Carolyn (Moschgat) McCowan, his brother Donald ‘Mac’ McCowan, favorite sister-in-law Betty Reiking, who was the maid of honor in their wedding, and recent passing of his brother-in-law William Moschgat who served as his best man. Survived by his daughter Mariann McCowan and partner Melody Madigan, beagle grand pups Remi and Ruger, brother-in-law Victor Moschgat, special cousins Richard and Roberta Janciga, his niece Judy Bloom and her family Brian and Blaise, sister Maxine Mikula, and several nieces and nephews. He was a 1953 graduate of Johnstown High School. James met his wife Carolyn while working at the Hiram G. Andrew Center. He became the manager of the Watson Standard- Johnstown Paint and Glass Company for over 25 years where he thrived with the success of the store and building lasting relationships with members of the community.  James continued his career in sales working at J&D Fleck Paint Company and Highway Hardware.  James was an avid outdoorsman throughout his lifetime, this began with raising several beagles with his father, most notably Patty, as well as hunting and fishing with many family members. His appetite for the outdoors was passed on to his daughter Mariann through many days and nights on their boat sharing fishing adventures. He loved listening to Irish music, going camping, doing yardwork and watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and Gunsmoke. The quality of his life was extended to a full active 88 years through the additional love and support of his caretakers and therapist. James was a devoted Catholic his entire life and a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church for the last 58 years. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home, Inc., 710 Broad Street where vigil service will be held. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Fr. David Peles officiating.
